Coffee Shop Owner– This fun game allows kids to run their very own coffee shop. They have to take note at the what the costumers like, how much money they have and are making and the weather.


  •  Key Vocabulary
    • Agitate – to move or force into violent, irregular action
    • Blunt- abrupt in address or manner
    • Boisterous- rough and noisy; noisily jolly or rowdy; clamorous; unrestrained
    • Caress- an act or gesture expressing affection, as an embrace or kiss,especially a light stroking or touching
    • Lull – to put to sleep or rest by soothing means
    • Optimist- A person with a disposition or tendency to look on the more favorable side of eventsor conditions and to expect the most favorable outcome
  • Before Reading:
    • Anticipation Guide – Have students fill out an anticipation guide to have them predict what they can expect to see form the book.


  • During Reading:
    • Figurative Language Hunt – This book is filled with all different types of figurative language. After reading each day, have students go back through the text and mark off all the metaphors, similes, etc. they can find.
  • After Reading:
    • Blabberize – Have students create a virtual blabberize of themselves giving a quick summary of the story in their own words.

Writing Activity:

  • After finishing the novel, how does its title connect back to the story? How has Mo been lucky in this book? Provide evidence from the text?
